John Rylands University Library Restoration

Restoring a masterpiece: the John Rylands University Library transformation

The John Rylands Research Institute and Library is a neo-Gothic gem in the heart of Manchester. As part of the “John Rylands Next Chapter” project, the challenge was to bring this landmark into the modern era without losing its 1890s soul. For our team, this wasn’t just another contract; it was a responsibility to Manchester’s architectural legacy.

Bridging the gap between stone and steel

The architectural brief, led by Donald Insall Associates, required a seamless transition between the original red sandstone and the new glass and steel pavilion. Our role focused on the strategic decorating of exhibition spaces and the relocated gallery.

Working on a listed building takes more than just a brush—it requires a deep understanding of materials. We used specialised Zinsser primers and Dulux Trade coatings to ensure the new finishes matched the dark patina of the library’s historic ironmongery. The palette was curated to echo the iridescent greys and deep blues found in the library’s oldest book bindings.

Why this project required a specialist touch:

  • Vertical precision: Navigating the soaring heights of the atrium and glass balustrades using narrow-aisle scissor lifts.
  • Live environment management: Maintaining a quiet, clean, and safe workspace while the library remained open to scholars.
  • Heritage compliance: Using breathable, high-specification coatings that respect the Grade I-listed status.
  • Modern integration: Ensuring contemporary exhibition walls felt like a natural extension of the Victorian masonry.

Navigating scale and sensitivity

As you can see in our project gallery, the verticality of the Rylands atrium presented unique hurdles. Our CSCS-carded team worked at height with total precision. This is where our SafeContractor accreditation really matters—it provides the peace of mind that we can handle high-stakes environments where “near enough” is never good enough.

Whether we are painting a world-class university library or applying industrial coatings to a facility in Bolton, our standard remains the same. The Rylands project shows what happens when heritage expertise meets modern decorating standards.

From the meticulous needs of a Manchester landmark to the residential transformations in Rochdale, we remain the North West’s trusted partner for high-specification finishes.
